Advanced Composition
Writing — A Window on the World

Course Description: In this upper-level, advanced web-based composition course, students learn to write in many styles. They learn the major steps of the writing process: prewriting, drafting, peer review, and revision. Students identify audiences, generate topics, organize information, and edit and hone effective writing techniques. Students build a portfolio and learn to critique the work of others. Basic computer skills are recommended.


Course Contents:
Students will learn about:

  • Prewriting — warming up, observing, stretching, and journaling
  • Drafting — creating a thesis, exploring a topic, organizing information, writing the paper
  • Peer review — reviewing another student’s work, readying his/her own work to be reviewed, accepting and giving constructive comments
  • Revising — trying out new introductions, replanning the essay, predicting paragraphs
  • Assembling portfolios — electing the best essays, creating a collection of peer reviews and prewriting samples to demonstrate a variety of writing skills
