CAHSEE Essential Math

Course Description: Essential Math is a series of five modules designed to help students master the portions of the California Mathematics Content Standards, as outlined below:

  • The Number Sense module focuses on creating a foundational understanding of fractions, decimals, percents, and integers. Comprehension of these basic components and how they can be applied to other areas of mathematics and day-to-day life is fundamental to further learning in mathematics.
  • The Statistics, Data Analysis, and Probability module focuses on expanding the learners' basic working knowledge of statistics and probability that will be important in making intelligent business decisions and healthy lifestyle choices.
  • The Algebra and Functions module builds basic algebra skills dealing with graphs, formulas, linear functions, and equation solving. These skills will keep college options open and aid in training for technical, math, and science careers.
  • The Measurement and Geometry module concentrates on measurement conversion and the solving of geometric figures, and how the application of these basic skills to other areas of mathematics and day-to-day life is fundamental to architecture, landscaping, computer graphics, and art careers. In-depth understanding of these components of math lays a foundation for future studies in calculus and other high-level mathematics.
  • The Algebra 1 module expands the learners' basic algebra skills that will be important in gaining access to college and to math-, technical-, and science-related careers.

Each interactive lesson has self-check activities built into each topic; quizzes are provided at the end of each lesson, and a comprehensive test is included at the end of the module. The course framework is designed so that students need not necessarily start at the beginning; rather, they easily may be placed within the course at their knowledge level. Class.com's California standards-based lesson quizzes and comprehensive module exam can be used in assessing skill mastery for individual students.

Reading and writing mathematics is incorporated throughout the course as students participate in discussions, complete mathematical reasoning assignments, and explore mathematical websites. In addition, "Real World Connection" problems are integrated throughout the module to help students apply their knowledge of mathematics to real-life situations and across curriculums.

Number/Description of Projects, Exams, Activities, etc.:
  • Lesson Quizzes At the end of each lesson learners are presented with a graded quiz. Quiz items include random questions from each standard covered. The format of these tests will ensure the learners are exposed to a similar CAHSEE question from each concept within each standard. Each test item is aligned to a specific topic within the lesson. With quiz results mapped back to content, instructions will be able to easily identify learner deficiencies. This will enable instructors to easily monitor learner performance and enable prescribed personalized instruction for each student.
  • Module Exam — A graded exam will be presented to the learners at the end of each module that assesses learners on all standards covered within the strand. Module results per strand will enable teachers to prescribe personalized instruction for each student.
  • Mathematical Reasoning Assignments — At the end of each module, students will be given a mathematical reasoning assignment. The teacher reads each assignment and provides grading and feedback.
  • Group Discussions — In three of the lessons, students will be given the topic for a Discussion Group assignment. The teacher reads each discussion contribution and provides grading and feedback.
