Career Planning Exploration and Decision Making
Course Description:
This is a comprehensive web-based course, where
students first learn about themselves and how knowledge contributes
to career success. They use various career resources to investigate
careers and discover how goal setting and decision making are
integral to career planning. Students also master job-finding techniques
and learn how to make the transition from school to work. Basic
computer skills are recommended.
Course Contents:
Students will learn
about:
- Themselves and how their values,
skills, and interests contribute
to successful career planning.
- How various resources such as
"Hollands
Self-Directed Search," "The Occupational Outlook Handbook,"
"The Dictionary of Occupational Titles," information interviews,
and job shadowing can assist in gaining knowledge about specific
careers.
- Setting goals as an integral step in career planning.
- How decision-making
can help focus career direction.
- Organizing a job search, researching
job leads, identifying references, writing a standard resume,
filling out applications, and writing cover letters to help in the job search.
- Options available for career development,
such as post-secondary education,
military programs, apprenticeships, vocational schools, and
two-year colleges.
