World Civilizations 1A

Course Description: In this course, students will explore the many aspects of the various world civilizations, from the earliest civilizations that originated before 2300 B.C. to those that ruled the world in A.D. 1500. A broad range of cultural elements, including art, architecture, religion, education, family life, and roles of women in each civilization are addressed. Additionally, at various points in the course, "Highlights in History" pages showcase events or achievements from certain civilizations.


Course Contents:
Students will learn about:

  • The first civilizations, including developments during the Stone Age and groups that lived in the Orkney Islands, Sumer, and Egypt
  • World history during the years 2500 to 1000 B.C., including the development of civilization in the Indus Valley, the Olmecs of Latin America, China's Shang Dynasty, and the Minoans in Greece
  • Developments during the years 1000 to 500 B.C., including the Hittites, Persians, and other groups in the Middle East; Phoenicians and Hebrews; Indo-Aryans; and the rise of Ancient Greece
  • Changes in global civilizations in the period 500 B.C. to 500 A.D., including the rise of the Mayans, Alexander the Great and Hellenistic Civilization, the rise and fall of the Roman Empire (including the birth of Christianity), the Qin and Han Dynasties of China, and the Golden Age of India
  • The amazing changes in global development from 500 to 1500 A.D., including the rise of distinct Native American cultures, the spread of Islam and the Islamic empire, the Byzantine empire and Russia, China and the Mongol Empire, early Japan, and the dawning of the Middle Ages in Europe
