Safety in the Science Lab
Lesson 1.1

Safety is EVERYONE'S responsibility!

Laboratory Safety
Use common sense and a bit of science sense in the laboratory to keep everyone safe.

Safety Symbols
In addition to the safety rules that you need to follow, there are also symbols that are often used in a lab, to show you when certain precautions need to be followed. Study the following list, and answer the questions that follow.

What reasons would a person give for not wearing eye protection during a lab? What could happen in a lab if you are working with liquids and you are not wearing eye protection? Do you think the reasons in the first answer are reasonable when you think about the consequences in the second question? Explain why you agree or disagree with wearing safety glasses.
2. What should you wear to protect your clothing from laboratory hazards?
