iForward Instructor FAQ

Last Updated: August 31, 2023

Overview & Highlights

Below you’ll find a set of How To’s for working with Class as well as links to documentation for features that will be used heavily in iForward classes.

For information on any feature or workflow that is not covered here, consult the Instructor Guides.

Creating Classes

In general, normal classes should be created from within the Agilix Buzz. Office Hours sessions and Clubs can be created directly in the Class app and the guest link can be shared with participants. Any instance where a user joins a session from a guest link will require them to be verified the first time that they join the Class.

Class Creation via Agilix Buzz

  1. Instructors should log into Agilix Buzz and navigate to one of the course shells that has been created for one of their Fall courses.
  2. To create the Class session that will correspond to the Agilix Buzz course, a custom activity will need to be created within the course shell.
  3. The activity should have the following settings:
    1. Name: The name and time of the Class
    2. Content: Website
    3. Website URL: https://iforward.rest.pod-3.us-east-2.prod.class.com/v1/lti-launch/redirect
    4. Make sure to check the box for “Digitally sign the request for LTI” ✅
  4. Once created, the activity can then be placed within the list of Course resources.
  5. Launch the activity

Below is a screenshot of the correct configurations for the custom activity:

Finally, a full walkthrough of this setup process can be found here: https://watch.screencastify.com/v/t2yKIj97Ke73tSr8CiHH.

Class Creation in the Class App

Instructions for how to Create Classes can be found here on the Class support website: How to Create and Delete Class.

Using Multiple Buzz Courses with the Same Class

This workflow can be configured using the following steps:

  1. Choose the class with the most students and complete the above directions to set up the Class room in Buzz
  2. Open the class in Buzz
  3. Click on the Class room
  4. Choose the “Copy Guest Invite Link”
  5. Use the guest invite link to create a custom website activity in the other Buzz courses, exactly as you did with the first Buzz course, but without the special Class redirect URL that was provided above

Note: students that join Class sessions through this guest invite link will need to be verified the first time that they join.

Chat

Key Information:

There are several options for managing chat permissions in Class:

  • No One: This will disable the chat tool for students and only instructors will be able to post chat messages
  • Instructors Only: Students will be able to send direct messages to instructors ONLY
  • Instructors and Everyone Publicly: Students will be able to send direct messages to instructors and post messages to the Everyone thread
  • Everyone: Students will be able to message instructors, the Everyone thread, and other students

The Chat settings can be managed by clicking the Gear icon shown below.

For additional information, consult the Chat documentation page.

Share Screen & Annotations

Key Information:

Similar to a Zoom meeting, Class provides the ability to Share Screen and annotate over shared screen content. Included below are several important FYI’s about this feature:

  • Class for Web does not support annotations at this time, it is recommended that the Whiteboard is used instead in these scenarios;
  • All Shared Screen content is captured as part of recordings

A full walkthrough of Screen Share and Annotations can be found on the Share Screen documentation page.

Class Recordings

Key Information:

  • Class Recordings capture the Class gallery view, Shared Screen Content, and any Whiteboard content that is viewed by instructors while Recordings are active.
  • At this time, Class Recordings do not capture Breakout Rooms apart from what is visible to an instructor while recording to their device from within a Breakout Room.
  • Class Recordings will default to Local Recordings, meaning that recording files will be saved to your device. These files can be found in Documents > Zoom on your computer in a time-stamped folder that is created for each Class session.
  • When returning from Breakout Rooms, always make sure that Recordings are started again.

For additional information, consult the Recordings documentation page.

Breakout Rooms

Key Information:

All pertinent information can be found on the Breakout Rooms documentation page.

Polls

Key Information:

Polls can be created during Class sessions, but for an optimal experience it is recommended to create polls prior to a Class session.

All other pertinent information can be found on the Polls documentation page.

Whiteboard

Key Information:

Class comes with a fully-featured Whiteboard that has been purpose-built for educational settings. This includes the following capabilities:

  • The ability to create an unlimited number of Whiteboards for each Class session, which enables the use of Whiteboards for specific units, modules, or topics;
  • The ability to upload PDFs to Whiteboards to allow for annotation over documents;
  • The ability to create individual whiteboards for each student in the Class session;
  • A built-in presenter mode that allows for participants to control which page of a whiteboard is shown to the Class

A full walkthrough of the Whiteboard tool can be found on the Whiteboard documentation page.

Proctor View

Key Information:

  • Proctor View is supported across platforms, but the live video feed is only available for students on macOS and Windows devices;
  • Proctor View screenshots or video feeds are not recorded at this time;

A full walkthrough of the feature can be found on the Proctor View documentation page.

Class Attendance

Key Information:

  • The Class attendance report will only include users that have been added to the roster.
  • Attendance reports will also only report on scheduled class sessions — any sessions that are not added to the Class schedule will not be tracked.

For additional information, consult the Attendance documentation page.
