Class: Using a Timeserver with the Class App

Last updated: March 21st, 2023.

Platform: Mac, Windows, iOS, Web App, Class

Version: All

Issue/Functionality:

Unsynchronized time and date settings can potentially cause issues with downloading/uploading proctoring and breakout room screenshots to an AWS S3 bucket if the time settings on the client device or server are not synchronized with the AWS S3 service.

Workaround:

A timeserver provides accurate and synchronized time information to client applications and devices. In computer networks, timeservers are often used to ensure that all devices in the network are using the same time, which is important for many applications that rely on time-based operations.

It’s important to note that some organizations may have specific timeservers that they require their devices to use, so it’s always a good idea to check with your IT department before making any changes to the timeserver settings.

For Windows:

  1. Click on the clock in the bottom right corner of the screen.

  2. Click on “Date and time settings.”

  3. Click on “Additional date, time, & regional settings.”

  4. Click on “Set the time and date.”

  5. Click on the “Internet Time” tab.

  6. Click on “Change settings.”

  7. Check the box next to “Synchronize with an Internet time server.”

  8. Click on the drop-down menu next to “Server” and select the timeserver you want to use. Alternatively, you can enter the address of a custom timeserver in the text field.

For Mac:

  1. Click on the Apple icon in the top left corner of the screen and select “System Preferences.”

  2. Click on “Date & Time.”

  3. Click on the “Time Zone” tab.

  4. Check the box next to “Set time zone automatically using current location” to use the automatic timeserver settings, or click on the lock icon in the bottom left corner and enter your administrator password to make changes.

  5. Click on the drop-down menu next to “Time Zone” and select the time zone you want to use.

  6. Click on the drop-down menu next to “Set date and time automatically” and select the timeserver you want to use. Alternatively, you can enter the address of a custom timeserver in the text field.

For iOS:

  1. Open the “Settings” app.

  2. Tap on “General.”

  3. Tap on “Date & Time.”

  4. Toggle on “Set Automatically” to use the automatic timeserver settings, or toggle it off to make changes.

  5. Tap on the drop-down menu next to “Time Zone” and select the time zone you want to use.

  6. Tap on the drop-down menu next to “Set Automatically” and select the timeserver you want to use. Alternatively, you can enter the address of a custom timeserver in the text field.
