Release Notes

Version 2.5 — July 19, 2022


This release includes a revamp of the macOS application available through the latest update. A minimum version of macOS Big Sur (11.0) is now required for the Class application. Class will no longer support previous versions, and therefore, macOS Catalina 10.15 will no longer be supported. Users on Catalina 10.15 and Class app version 2.4.1 will not be prompted with an update message.

This release also includes two-way annotations, remote control requests, breakout room timers, broadcast messages, light/dark mode, several enhancements, bug fixes, major stability improvements with respect to socket connections, and an upgrade to Zoom SDK version 5.11.

Please note: To update to the newest version of the Class app (2.5+), users will need to download Class v2.4.1 from their organization’s class page (ex. [subdomain]

After downloading and installing Class v2.4.1, you can update to the newest Class experience by updating the app via the Class menu in the Apple Menu Bar. Update the app by navigating to Class in the menu bar and selecting “Check for Updates”. Please read more on our knowledge base article here.


Annotations (two-way)
  • Participants viewing a shared screen will now be able to annotate on the screen and view other participants’ annotations in near real-time. Viewers can annotate by selecting View Options > Annotate

    The annotations toolbar will open with tools options to:

    • Select an annotation
    • Free-draw an annotation or select specific shapes
    • Spotlight
    • Erase annotations
    • Change the color of drawing annotations
    • Change line width of the line annotation
    • Undo your last annotation
    • Redo your last undone annotation
    • Clear all of your annotations
    • Save annotations as a .pdf or .png file 
      • Exported annotation files are stored in the meeting folder in your preferred directory where local recordings are stored. This can be changed from the Settings dialog:
Breakout room timers
  • Instructors or assistants creating breakout rooms will now have the option to select the number of minutes breakout rooms will be open before they automatically close
  • Instructors or assistants creating breakout rooms will now have the option to set a countdown timer for when breakout rooms close. If configured, all participants in breakout rooms will see a toast notification displaying the number of seconds left before rooms close, providing a smoother transition back into the main session
Broadcast messages to breakout rooms
  • This feature has returned – instructors and assistants will once again be able to broadcast messages to participants in breakout rooms. Participants will receive the message in the form of a toast notification to provide a minimally disruptive notification. If your macOS device does not have toast notifications enabled, see the guide on how to enable them.
Class access
  • On the Configuration page under Class access, admins can choose to hide from the launch page the following options to join Class:
    • Link to join via Class on Web
    • Link to Download Class application
    • Link to join via Zoom
Clear all reactions and lower all hands
  • Instructors and assistants now have the option to clear all reactions of all users and to lower all raised hands so that they can better interact with and pose questions to participants. These actions are available in both the Participants list, the main toolbar, and are also keyboard accessible.
Dark mode
  • Class on macOS now supports dark mode for users who have configured their macOS device to use dark mode
Remote control
  • Class users on macOS can request remote control when viewing a screen-share from the “View options” menu


  • Users can chat to “Everyone” from the All Messages thread
Waiting room
  • Host instructors will receive a toast notification when someone has joined their waiting room and will have the option to admit them or everyone in the waiting room from the “options” menu. Toast notifications must be enabled for the Class application, if you are not sure how to do that, you can see it here.

  • Host instructors will also see the option to admit participant(s) in the waiting room from the Participants list in the sidebar
  • Participants in the waiting room will see an option to leave the waiting room
General use
  • When reporting a technical issue, the form will automatically populate the “name” field with the reporter’s username. If the user is not signed in, it will be populated with the name they input in the session
  • Randomized loading messages have been removed and replaced with a generic message to inform the user that their session is loading
  • The description the instructor inputs during class creation is displayed in the meeting information dialog


  • Admins may now initiate LTI diagnostic mode to better troubleshoot set-up issues in a specific LTI integration
  • Given that LTI diagnostic mode has been turned on by an admin for an integration, LMS users may click the ‘Launch’ button in order to troubleshoot their integration and view the following information:
    • The raw data that is transferred
    • User level warnings based on this data

Bug Fixes

  • Fixed issue with disabling LMS from Admin Settings
  • Fixed issues with chat not sending in longer sessions
  • Fixed issues with chat occasionally clearing when the websocket disconnects
Screen sharing
  • Fixed issue where selecting the option to share only audio would display an empty floating gallery window to the screen sharer
  • Fixed intermittent issues with users being unable to view whiteboard drawings
  • Fixed issue where images that were copied and pasted to other pages were not displaying 
General use
  • Major improvements to product stability with respect to web socket connections have been made, fixing issues related to unexpected sidebar refreshes and chat functionality in long-running meetings
  • Fixed issue where users were unable to select the location for local recordings on their device
  • Fixed issue where the icons on the Class home page were not selectable, and only the page labels were selectable
    • Local recordings will be stored in the preferred folder for Class local recordings and exported annotations, changeable from the Settings dialog > Recordings

  • Fixed issue where instructors and assistants were able to create breakout rooms with the same name
  • Fixed issue where the “Admit All” button does not change state when selected

Known Issues

Breakout rooms
  • Issues with Zoom users returning from a breakout room showing as unverified
  • Instructor is not able to see the chat thread for a breakout room after joining and leaving it
  • Intermittent issues with the “more” button in breakout rooms being unresponsive on the sidebar
  • Issues with duplicate users showing as unverified when using breakout rooms
  • Issues with users getting unverified when joining and leaving a breakout room
  • Issue where the Host/Co-Host labels in the Participant list disappear when breakout rooms are launched
  • Issues with chat not navigating the user to the newest message
Class Mgmt
  • Issues with bulk roster upload
Demo class
  • Demo class is not available in the new macOS build
  • Mistranslations for professor, trainer, and teacher role names
  • Mute All and Verify All not visible in Spanish translated application
  • In Spanish translation of the applciation, the label for Absent participants is missing
  • Japanese translation of application has incorrect labels for breakout room chat threads
  • Editing a class from an LMS does not refresh the page with the updated class details
  • Changes to to a user’s role from an LMS do not reflect in Class
  • Error creating a class from LMS
  • Issues with host instructor losing privileges when launching through LTI
  • Issues with Zoom Cloud Recording Links not displaying in the LMS
  • Issues with LTI verification not properly parsing the username
Screen recording
  • When automatic recording is enabled, the recording status bar is not currently displayed
  • Statistics in the Zoom settings window are currently missing
Virtual backgrounds and filter
  • Currently there is no option to select a “Blur” filter for your virtual background
General use
  • Installing Class invalidates the Zoom SSO token, users navigating to their organizations domain will be required to log in again
