How to Navigate the Seating Chart & Views

Last updated: May 5, 2023.

The goal of the Seating chart functionality is to give teachers a way to view class members in different ways based on what is happening in the virtual classroom.

1.

The Front of Room functionality defaults to on when a classroom session begins. The Front of Room functionality is managed through a sub-menu as part of the Seating Chart configuration options.

The goal of the Front of Room functionality is to provide a space within the Classroom tab UI that is very noticeable for the class participants. Different members of the class can be placed in the Front of Class section based on what the instructor selects. For example, in the picture below, we have selected Presenters to be in Front of Room.

2.

The Front of Room functionality has 3 display modes:

    • TA’s: this mode will place all users with the role of instructor and assistant in the Front of Room component

    • Presenters: this mode will place all users that have been designated as Presenters in the Front of Room component

    • Speaking: this mode will place the user that is currently speaking in the Front of Room component

3.

On iOS, Front of Room is in the top-right drop-down rather than the left drop-down in the top toolbar.

4.

Gallery View displays the entire class and is enabled/selected by default when starting a class session. When class members select the Gallery View, then all class members appear in the classroom in the order in which they joined the class.

5.

When class members activate the Speaker View, then the class member who is currently speaking appears as the main window in the classroom tab and other members should be hidden, as is the case with Zoom’s speaker view.

6.

When the Seating Chart mode is updated to Participation:

  • The grid view of the classroom tab should update to show participants in three groups:

    1. Users that have not spoken or have spoken in the lowest third of the total talk time for the class. The users more than one standard deviation below the average talk time should display first in the grid view before other users and have a red bar next to their profile panels.

    2. Users that have spoken in the middle third of the total talk time for the class. These users within one standard deviation of the average talk time should display next in the grid view after the least active users and have a yellow bar next to their profile panels.

    3. Users that have spoken in the top third of the total talk time for the class. These users greater than one standard deviation above the average talk time should display last in the grid view after all other users and have a green bar next to their profile panels.

7.

When the Seating Chart mode is updated to Feedback:

  • The grid view of the classroom tab should update to show all participants who are currently providing feedback before users that have not provided feedback. These users should display in the order of who has currently been providing feedback for the longest amount of time, regardless of role or presenter designation.
  • All classroom participants who are not providing feedback should be shown in the classroom tab after those that are in the general sort order.
  • If a user adds or removes feedback while this view is enabled, then their position within the classroom tab should be updated in real-time.
  • When enabled, the order of participants on the classroom tab should be the same as is shown on an activity tab.

8.

When the Seating Chart mode is updated to Alphabetical:

  • All classroom participants should display in the Classroom tab in order of the last name, regardless of role or presenter designation.
  • All classroom participants should display in the same order when viewing an activity tab.

9.

When the Seating Chart mode is updated to Hand Raised:

  • The grid view of the classroom tab should update to show all participants with their hands raised before users that do not have their hands raised. These users should display in the order of who has currently had their hand raised for the longest amount of time, regardless of role or presenter designation.
  • All classroom participants who do not have their hands raised should be shown in the classroom tab after those that have their hands raised in the general sort order.
  • If a user raises or lowers their hand while this view is enabled, then their position within the classroom tab should be updated in real-time.
  • When enabled, the order of participants on the classroom tab should be the same as is shown on an activity tab.

10.

When the Seating Chart mode is updated to Unverified:

  • The grid view of the classroom tab should update to show all participants that have a verification status of Unverified before all other users.
  • Unverified users should be shown in alphabetical order by last name.
  • If a user’s verification state changes while this view is enabled, then their position within the classroom tab should be updated in real-time.
  • All other users should be shown in the classroom tab after those that are in the general sort order.
  • When enabled, the order of participants on the classroom tab should be the same as is shown on an activity tab.

FAQs:

Q: Does the front of room persist across sessions?

A: Yes, you will need to manually toggle it off/on each session if preferred.

Q: Do front of room presenters remain at the front of room within their break out rooms?

A:  No, any user assigned the “presenter” label in the main classroom and assigned to the front of the room loses the label upon entering a break out room and will not appear in the front of room in the break out room. An instructor must join, assign, and turn front of room on within the break out room.
